Comparing answering services is deliberately hard. One quotes a monthly minimum, another a per-call rate, a third a per-minute rate with a different definition of what counts as a minute. What the named providers publish
Per call or per minute: the arithmetic
The break-even is simply the per-call price divided by the per-minute rate. At $2.50 per call and $1.50 per minute, the two cost the same at a call length of 1 minute 40 seconds. Longer than that and per-call wins; shorter and per-minute wins.
This is why the model matters more than the sticker price. A business fielding quick “are you open?” calls is punished by per-call billing — you pay $2.50 for fifteen seconds of work. A business taking detailed intake calls is punished by per-minute billing, because the meter runs through every pause.
Measure before you choose: take last month's phone bill, divide total talk minutes by total answered calls, and you have your average call length. Most small businesses land between three and four minutes.
The costs that aren't on the pricing page
- Billing increments. Some services round every call up to the next minute, or bill in 30-second blocks. A 70-second call can be billed as two minutes.
- What counts as billable. Hold time, the operator's wrap-up time after the call, and spam calls are often all billable. You pay for wrong numbers.
- After-hours surcharges. Commonly $0.50–$1.50 per minute on evenings, weekends and holidays — exactly the hours you were hoping to cover.
- Setup and integration fees. $100–$500 one-time is normal with traditional services.
- Minimum commitments. Bundles rarely roll over. Unused minutes are gone at month end.

When calls need judgement — legal intake with conflict checks, distressed callers, negotiation — a trained human earns the rate, and hybrid services exist for exactly that. But audit a week of your call log first and count how many calls actually needed a person.
